Are you and your kids prepared for the cold and flu season?
If you want to know which supplements, vitamins and natural medicines will boost your child’s immune system during the cold and flu season, keep this post bookmarked, and share with those you love. Here’s some great advice from one of our SAFbaby Health Expert Advisers, Dr. Neustaedter.
The weather in many parts of the world is starting to turn colder and wet this month. In preparation for the colds and other viruses that circulate among kids this time of year, there are several things that parents can do.
How To Supplement Babies & Children With Immune Boosting Support
The most important supplement to take for immune support is vitamin D. All children who do not get adequate sun exposure in tropical climates should take a daily dose of vitamin D in the winter. Appropriate dosage of vitamin D is 400-800 mg for infants in the first year, 2,000 mg for toddlers and elementary school age, and 4,000 mg for teens.
A second important immune supplement is the herb astragalus. Use a formula containing astragalus formulated for children. One formula that also contains immune system enhancing mushrooms is the Immunoberry formula by Designs for Health.
Finally a whey protein or colostrum powder supplement containing lactoferrin and active immunoglobulins will complete an immune fortifying program for the winter months.
Treating Colds With Natural/Herbal Formulas
The treatment of colds and flus is simple. Use a vitamin A supplement at the onset of cold symptoms (10,000-20,000 IU per day) and through the duration of the cold.
Elderberry extract is a potent antiviral. There are many flavored extracts for children. Elderberry has been shown to decrease the duration of viral illnesses in controlled studies.
Finally, a Yin Chiao Chinese herbal formula is a very effective active treatment for viral infections. The primary ingredients of yin chiao are Lonicera, Forsythia, and Platycodon. There are several liquid versions of this formula designed for children (Yin Chiao Jr by Health Concerns, Windbreaker by Kan Herb, and Children’s Clear and Release by Golden Flower). Airborne is a pleasant-tasting, fizzy tablet that contains vitamin A and some of these herbs. All of these preparations are safe for children.
