Breast milk is the perfect food for babies. It provides unparalleled health and well-being benefits to the baby and mother. But breast milk is not ‘just food.’ As discussed in our post, “Formula? Wait! Try This First”, breast milk is also a “highly sophisticated signaling system developed over millions of years that relays information to the baby to develop adequate metabolic, hypothalamic and immunologic programming that can affect her whole life. Formula interferes with this signaling and the effects are lifelong.”

Guidelines established by The World Health Organization in their publication “Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding” list what is best for baby when breast milk is not an option in order of what is healthiest:

  • breast milk from the child’s own mother
  • breast milk from a healthy wet nurse;
  • breast milk from a milk bank; and then
  • breast milk substitute.

If the first three options are not possible, there is a substitute for breast milk other than commercial formula. The Weston A. Price Foundation offers three baby formula recipes that have been tried and tested by mothers all over the world. Below is the cow milk-based formula with links to further information. Radiant Life sells a kit containing most of the ingredients and the video is a great guide to show you how to easily put it all together. 

Cow Milk-Based Formula

Makes 36 ounces

2 cups organic, certified clean raw milk or organic pasteurized, nonhomogenized piima milk, preferably from pasture-fed Jersey or Guernsey cows
¼ cup homemade liquid whey (Note: Do NOT use powdered whey or whey from making cheese (which will cause the formula to curdle). Use only homemade whey made from yoghurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
4 tablespoons lactose
¼ teaspoon bifodobacterium infantis
2 tablespoons good quality cream, preferably raw (not ultrapasteurized)
½ teaspoon fermented cod liver oil
1 teaspoon unrefined sunflower oil
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons coconut oil
2 teaspoons nutritional yeast
2 teaspoons gelatin
1 7/8 cups filtered water
¼ teaspoon acerola powder

It is imperative that keen attention is paid in the preparation. Add gelatin to water and heat gently until gelatin is dissolved. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend well. Transfer to a very clean glass or stainless steel container and mix well. (Note: If milk is from Holstein cows, add an additional 1-2 tablespoons cream).

To serve, pour 6-8 ounces into a very clean glass bottle, attach nipple and set in a pan of simmering water.  Heat until warm but not hot to the touch, shake bottle well and feed baby. Never, never heat formula in a microwave oven!
